Sonos Tips and Tricks

Share Article

Sonos is one of, if not the, leading multi-room offering out there. With a plentiful speaker line-up, the combinations and possibilities are endless. More than just being a music-playing system, the modularity and advanced platform Sonos is controlled on really makes it stand out from the competition. Want some tips and tricks to get the most out of your Sonos system? You’ve come to the right place.

Let’s start with some basic ones.

Adding another speaker / SUB to your system

Expandable and modular, one does not simply stop at a single Sonos player. Looking to expand to a whole home theater system or just another player to get multi-room jams? Simply tap the three dots in the bottom right corner of the app > Settings > Add a Player / SUB and follow the instruction on-screen.

 Adding Sonos Speaker

Making your Sonos sound (even) better

Yes, it’s possible. With a feature called Trueplay, you essentially own an in-built sound engineer in the palm of your hand. By emitting a series of test sounds including brown noise and pulse sounds from the speakers, the microphone in your iOS device measures how the sound waves reflect off the walls, furnishings and surfaces in your room, thus determining the layout of your room. Tuning then takes place automatically.

The idea of this is that you should not have to think where to put a speaker. You can put it wherever you want to, and it can sound equally good - with Trueplay, that is.

Additionally, for the audio purists out there who HAVE to tweak your sound, the Sonos app allows you to tune the EQ on each of your Sonos players. Too much boom in your room? Turn down the bass a notch. Are you all about that bass? Turn it up. Pretty handy, no?

Sonos Spotify Connect

Control Sonos through Spotify

An ever-progressive system, Sonos delivers regular software updates, some small, others more significant, such as Spotify Connect compatibility. In the past, Sonos speakers could only be controlled via the Sonos app, but with a simple software update, you can now control your speakers directly through Spotify.

In the Spotify app, tap on Devices Available at the bottom of the screen, and then select the Sonos player you want your jam on. Then pick your jam. It’s that simple.

Sonos Vinyl

Stream Vinyl

Vinyl is back, and in a big way. Can a cutting-edge system like Sonos pair up with your ancient turntable? Yes, it turns out. Connect your turntable to either the PLAY:5’s line-in port, or audio-in jacks of a Sonos CONNECT or CONNECT:AMP. Head to your Sonos app, tap on Browse > Line-In > Select your source. With Sonos, you don’t have to choose between streaming and spinning.

Set an alarm / Sleep timer

Want to come wake up to your favorite tune? Come home to your favorite tune? Play a song for your pet while you’re out at work? Do all of that with Sonos’ alarm function. Decide how long you want the alarm to sound for, send it to all your speakers in your home, or even different alarms for each different speaker. Simply go to Alarms > New Alarm and you’re good to go.

Sonos Alarm

Of course, these are merely the tip of the iceberg into the endless capabilities of Sonos. If Sonos is your multi-room system of choice, stay tuned as we unveil more nifty tips and tricks to get the most out of your system. If not, it’s time to head over here.
