Sonos Trueplay

Share Article

Every room sounds different.
With Trueplay, they can all sound great.
Trueplay analyses room size, layout, décor, speaker placement, and any other acoustic factors that can impact sound quality. Then it perfectly adjusts how each woofer and tweeter produces sound. Your Sonos speakers sound better than they already were.

Yes, it’s possible. And it only takes just a few minutes and an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
With Trueplay, you essentially own an in-built sound engineer in the palm of your hand. By emitting a series of test sounds including brown noise and pulse sounds from the speakers, the microphone in your iOS device measures how the sound waves reflect off the walls, furnishings and surfaces in your room, thus determining the layout of your room. Tuning then takes place automatically.

The idea of this is that you should not have to think where to put a speaker. You can put it wherever you want to, and it can sound equally good - with Trueplay, that is.

Trueplay Successful

Ensuring Good Tuning
Minimize noise: Do your best to minimize noise during the tuning process. If possible, temporarily shut off any appliances (such as fans, air conditioners, washer/dryers) that are producing background noise. Refrain from talking during the tuning phase and be conscious of making loud noises while walking around the room. If your device has a protective case that covers the microphone, you may be instructed by the app to remove it before tuning.

Cover as much area as possible: During the tuning process, do your best to cover as much of the room as possible. If you are tuning a speaker in a small room, use any remaining time after covering the room to focus on the areas where you listen to music the most.

Moving your device: During the in-app Trueplay instructions, be sure to watch the 45 second instructional video which demonstrates the technique for moving your device during the tuning phase. The video does not contain audio. Make smooth movements from head to waist with your device. Avoid moving your device too fast as this can cause a wind-like effect to be picked up by the microphone.

Do not adjust the volume: To ensure a quality calibration, the sound emitted by your speaker during tuning is fairly loud. Do not adjust the volume using the buttons on your speaker while the tuning sound is playing, as this will negatively impact your calibration. If you need to abort the tuning process, you can press the Play/Pause button on your speaker or tap the X that appears onscreen in the app during tuning.

Trueplay tuning adjusts each woofer and tweeter to make sure the sound reaches your ears from every direction at just the right instant and volume.
For your Sonos home theatre setup - from Playbase or Playbar, with or without Sub, to full surround sound with Sonos rear channels – Trueplay balances and fine-tunes. You can set your home theatre system up however you want, in any room - and know it will sound amazing.

The result? Everything you hear feels more immersive, more intense, and more real.
